Andriod AVD only showing Andriod in the middle

I am new with Andriod and following googles android docs and managed to install everything with no problems. but whenever i try to run the HelloAndroid example the avd launches but doesn't show anything.
What's wrong going on?

There are a few reasons why your Android AVD might only be showing "Android" in the middle. Here are some possible solutions:

  • The AVD is not fully initialized. It can take a few minutes for an AVD to initialize, so if you just created the AVD, it might not be ready yet. Give it some time and try again.
  • The AVD is running out of memory. If your AVD is running out of memory, it might not be able to display the entire screen. Try closing any other programs that you are running and see if that helps.
  • The AVD is using a pre-release version of Android. If you are using a pre-release version of Android, it might not be fully compatible with your emulator. Try using a different version of Android or updating your emulator.

As soon  as you create an AVD it really does take a long time to initialize. On my less than year old Core2Duo 2.8 GHz running Win7x64 and 4Gb of RAM, initializing a 2.2 version took at least 5 to 10 minutes (if not longer). Once it starts initializing you can watch the logcat in the DDMS panel of eclipse and watch it unpack and install all of the apps in the emulator.
